what is a career in property and construction? The property and construction sector has an impact on everybody’s lives – from the buildings we live in to where we work and play. If you stop to think about it, property plays a part in your life every day. This sector is one of New Zealand’s largest employers, and isn’t just about building sites and high vis jackets – there are lots of different career paths. As you can see on page 2, there are many options for you to consider. In fact, you may not have heard of all the careers on offer. Keystone Trust was established in 1994 to help young people with financial and circumstantial need to study at tertiary level for a career in the built environment. We are the only Trust dedicated to support the property and construction industry through scholarships to tertiary study. We invite you to find out if a career in the property and construction industry is for you by reading the information in this booklet and visiting our website. We also suggest you talk with your Careers Advisor, your parents or guardians and friends about what your future could look like. We look forward to hearing from you if you decide this career path is right for you.
WHY DO I LOVE THIS INDUSTRY?
PATRICK KEYSTONE ALUMNI 2019 BACHELOR OF CONSTRUCTION (QS)
“The construction industry is full of people who are really enthusiastic about what they do, no matter what role they’re in. If you are honest and do a good job you can go a long way with your career.”
RYAN KEYSTONE ALUMNI 2016 • BACHELOR OF SURVEYING
“Every day in a surveying role is different! It is one of the few jobs that has true variety, because the amount of knowledge in the industry is incredible and there is always more to learn.”
SOPHIE KEYSTONE STUDENT 2019 BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES
“I love this industry because it is so broad with the things you can do. There’s multiple careers in the industry which means you have options to learn off different people and what they specialise in. I’m excited to be able to work alongside and learn from people in the property industry.” BUILD YOUR FUTURE 3

home with my parents splitting up when I was young and four younger siblings to look out for. My Nan was sick, so as the eldest son, I was packed off to look after her. I was a bit of a survivor, I was also pretty independent back then, taking off to Raglan or Dunedin and sleeping on couches was a pretty normal weekend. “Anyhow Craig’s words stuck, and to my surprise I graduated from school as one of their top students. With Craig’s input I had filled out my Keystone scholarship application and this is when everything changed. “The next I knew I was in Auckland, for the first time in my life, going up to a fancy office in the Sun Alliance building and meeting ten high-flyers, who were the Keystone selection panel. Mum had told me to always shake hands and I made sure I did. I wouldn’t say I was nervous, just super pumped at being there. When I returned to Gisborne, I got the call, I had the scholarship. Awesome! “This is where the Keystone support system kicked in, uni days started at Wintec in Hamilton. With a strength for numbers I fell into Quantity Surveying. Then with the support of my mentors at Keystone came a move to Auckland, working as cadet for Multiplex, and finishing my

studies at Unitec. I was always being told “You are capable of anything” and I found out I was. Keystone were right behind me all the way. Jumping to today, I am a director of C3 Construction, a firm I established with two other business colleagues. We are a growing construction company and I am now in a position to employ Keystone Trust alumni. We have just taken on a young quantity surveyor into the team who was a student back in 2016.” Tamati is now a trustee on the Keystone Board of Trustees, and this year with his fellow directors established a school leaver scholarship. “Looking back, I can see the difference Keystone made to my life, they inspired me to reach those goals I had set with Craig. I look up to all the students who went before me, and the people I have met through these networks are now some of my best mates. Its inspiring to see how the organisation has grown and now, it’s my turn to give back.” BUILD YOUR FUTURE 7
What is a Quantity Surveyor? WHY DID I CHOOSE MY QUALIFICATION?
Jamie has been working as a quantity surveyor for three years, even though she only graduated from university in 2019! Jamie received two Keystone Trust Scholarships from Dominion Constructors and Leighs Construction in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Jamie now works as a quantity surveyor at C3 Construction.
JAMIE KEYSTONE ALUMNI 2015 • C3 CONSTRUCTION HOW DID YOUR CAREER START?
ASALEMO KEYSTONE STUDENT 2018 • BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING “With an engineering degree, you get to be a part of something that people will see and use everyday, this is something that you can be proud of having accomplished.”
When I got my scholarship with Leighs they offered me part-time work as a junior quantity surveyor while I was at university. My degree was structured so that I was only there two days a week for lectures. WHAT IS A QUANTITY SURVEYOR?
I would describe it as a construction accountant. You’re in charge of all the finances on a project, talking to subcontractors and finding prices. HOW MANY QUANTITY SURVEYORS WORK ON ONE SITE?
It depends on how big the project is.
KAITLYN KEYSTONE ALUMNI 2019 • BACHELOR OF PROPERTY “A property degree will allow you to take many different career paths. We study everything from property management and marketing to economics and finance, right through to more practical applications such as valuation and construction.”
JAYJAY KEYSTONE ALUMNI 2019 • BACHELOR OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT “I love design and architecture, but I also wanted to do something in business management, where I could be a leader. A construction degree allowed me to achieve both of those goals.”

HAVE YOU LEARNED ANYTHING THROUGH YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE THAT YOU DIDN’T GET THROUGH YOUR DEGREE?
That there’s tons of different ways to be a quantity surveyor. At university, you are going to learn one way, whereas the companies you work for have their own way of doing things. It’s exciting to have experience with both!
What is a Project Manager? Cynthia studied architecture at the University of Auckland, and is now a project manager at TSA Management. At high school she liked art, history, chemistry, and classics, and thought about being a lawyer. She received a Keystone Study Award in 2009 and graduated in 2014.

I’m glad I took a leap and joined the construction industry when I was older, but I wonder how much more I could have achieved if I had started sooner. My advice would be to do what you want regardless of what your mates think. It’s an awesome industry to be in, one where I have always felt valued, respected and challenged. As a female in a male dominated industry, I recommend you bring your own skill set, your own knowledge and don’t let anyone push you around.
